And Somehow…Results

Healthy Lifestyle and I are still having trouble getting along. I left the bitch in Georgia when Toodles and I went to Kentucky. There was just too much going on to be bothered with her. Since I’ve quit paying so much attention, my weight has steadily dropped about a pound a week. The ten pounds I keep gaining back are gone, at least for now. Whether I gain them back or finally move on to the next ten remains to be seen. I’m optimistic. In the last two months I’ve skipped sessions with my trainer, cut my Zumba time in half, and just about stopped doing any strength training at all. I’m not running as much either, though I have …

Ongoing Relationship Issues

You haven’t read anything about my diet and exercise program since me and Healthy Lifestyle started feuding early last month. I said then that we wouldn’t be having this trouble if she just didn’t expect so much from me. Seriously. “Fine,” she said. “Do things your way. Remember how that worked for you? Remember where you were back before we met? Is that what you want?” Lighten up, bitch. And so it goes. That I know she’s right doesn’t keep me from resenting the way she bosses me around. I mean, really–I’m a grown-ass man. I’m trying to exercise for at least thirty minutes, six days a week. Trying. I’ve missed a day or two here and there because of …

In My Defense…

I need to talk about the photograph that showed up on my Facebook page late yesterday afternoon. The emails I’ve received, the comments people made on the original Facebook post, and the things people have said to me since they saw the photograph demand a response. Today I’m here to offer my defense. People want to know what’s in the bowl. It’s ice cream (Neopolitan, so of course I had to have some of all three flavors) drizzled with chocolate syrup (Hershey’s. Is there another kind?), covered with whipped topping, dusted with sprinkles and peanuts, and finished with just a little more chocolate syrup. I spent my first two years in the workforce dipping ice-cream, so I know a thing …

A Harsh Mistress…

Me and my Healthy Lifestyle have barely been on speaking terms. The disagreement started in the weeks leading up to our annual derby party. Since then, things between us have only gotten worse. Don’t get me wrong. I love my Healthy Lifestyle. But sometimes the bitch flat wears me out. Seriously. A fellow needs to just sit around on his ass eating pizza and drinking beer now and then. It’s a fact of nature. Science. During our vacation at the beach last month, me and Healthy Lifestyle didn’t have a thing to do with each other. In fact, I didn’t come anywhere close the entire time we were gone. It was nice to get away. Since then, things have really …

A Little Bit of This, A Little Bit of That…

Writing has been a key interest for most of my life. The rest come and go, some lasting for decades and others keeping my attention for only a few weeks. You’ll notice a trend. When I’m in, I dive into the deep-end and completely immerse myself in whatever activity has caught my fancy. My interests vary.  Some…more than I care to admit…are currently in the inactive mode. That I’m not currently engaged in the activity doesn’t mean I don’t like it any more. It’s just that there are only so many hours in a day, and obsessing takes a lot of time. Tropical Fish. Few things are more beautiful than a well-maintained aquarium. Saltwater tanks are pretty, but I prefer a freshwater …

They’re Back

The same ten pounds I’ve battled for the last twelve months have returned. Since we had to go out for anything we ate, I expected to maybe lose weight on vacation. I hear you laughing, but it’s happened before. Honest. After we got home, I stepped onto the scale–naked–so whatever number popped up would be all me. I admired my new tan line in the bathroom mirror as I waited for the digits to stop flashing. I weigh EXACTLY the same as I did this time last year–before Weight Watchers, the gym membership, and my new running habit. Wah! I blame the tan. It couldn’t possibly have been anything I ate. Isn’t seafood good for you? Or maybe it was …

Working It in the Yard

My Zumba King get-up got me the prize for best costume in my Zumba class last Halloween–a CD with the Monday night instructor’s twenty favorite Zumba songs. I burned it on to my computers at work and at home, synced it onto my iPod Nano, keep the CD in my car, and added it to my Cloud on iTunes. Since October, I listen to at least a song or two from it practically every day. Last week, I got another CD at the Zumbathon I attended at the YWCA. This one contains 17 songs from my Sunday afternoon Zumba instructor. It’s also been downloaded everywhere I have music. I even created a special playlist with all my Zumba songs–35 all …

Scene at the Gym

This morning I hit the gym at 9:30 for an hour of strength training before Zumba. Yesterday I did the new legs and abs routine my trainer put together for me that we went over in my last session with him. Since he’ll show me the second routine on Tuesday when we get together again, this morning, I went back to my old routines. To make up for them being so much easier, I combined them. On strength-training days, I deliberately go to the gym during a slow time. That way I don’t have to worry about other people being on the machines I want when I’m ready for them. When I came in, I was happy to see that …

The Coupons Made Me Do It!

I’m five days into my new exercise routine. So far, so good–at least as far as exercise goes. Who knew that sticking to the exercise plan would be easier than eating right? I blame our active social life. We went out to dinner with friends Friday night.  Had I stayed with the entree and salad I ordered, things would have been fine. But I had a couple of margaritas (probably the worse thing someone trying to lose weight could drink) and enjoyed most of the fried zucchini appetizer we all shared. As is always the case when eating out, I burned up quite a few of  the weekly points I’m allowed to have on Weight Watchers. Yesterday I vowed to …

My So-Called (Healthy) Life

At yesterday’s weekly session, my personal trainer checked my measurements for the first time since late last year. The good news is that my body fat dropped another one percent and my calves are a tad thinner. Everything else–including my weight–was essentially the same. Read on for the bad news. No doubt, you’re thinking I was disappointed. My trainer certainly thought so. But I wasn’t. Yeah, seeing a big change in the positive direction would have been nice. But given that I usually gain anywhere from 15 to 30 pounds from December to April, I was frankly thrilled that my numbers were essentially unchanged. The one percent drop in body fat was a bonus. Even so, the lack of forward …
