Countdown to Finals

My first semester teaching a college course in more than thirty years is rapidly drawing to a close. The weeks since school started have flown by. The last day of class will be here in no time. The teaching I’ve done for more than thirty years is dramatically different from teaching a college course. Participation in the workshops I’ve taught in the past is voluntary. There are no grades, and I rarely see anyone twice or for longer than a few hours. Seeing the same students every Tuesday and Thursday for 15 weeks is a nice change. I look forward to each and every class. A few of my 46 students show up only on test days — if then — …

A Crotchety Christmas

Christmas is a very special time of year. Competing with the grandeur and spectacle of the yuletide celebration is a tall order. No other holiday celebration even comes close to the month-long festival of parades, television specials, religious services, community events, parties, dinners, and gift exchanges taking place in the Christmas season. Bah humbug! I’m over it. Somewhere along the way, my Christmas spirit flew the coop. Good riddance. I’ve moved on, and left no forwarding address. I quit decorating years ago. My ex (and the one before him) were responsible for any decorations in my house. Dragging all that crap out, untangling strings of lights, and then taking a day to put it all back up was too much trouble. …

Pet Writing Peeves: Pop Culture References

A good writer makes the reader feel like he or she is a witness to events in the story as they unfold. Keeping the reader’s attention focused on the action and dialogue is the goal. Errors and mistakes, when noticed, take the reader out of the story. Ignorance is bliss. Before getting published, as long as the story kept me interested, I could enjoy the most poorly written of novels. Not anymore. Now all kinds of things I never noticed — my personal pet peeves — take me out of the story. If this happens often enough, I quit reading and never finish the book.  I’m in the middle of a book by a favorite author who has had a …

I am not a hoarder. The neat freak in me couldn’t handle the mess. If anything, I err in the opposite direction, tossing stuff others would probably keep. Whether the result of nature or nurture, I can’t say. As with most traits, I suspect both play a role. My parents were both OCD control freaks. At least once every few months, I’d come home to find my bedroom spick and span…almost. A note atop a mountain of clutter piled on the bed, almost to the ceiling, advised me to deal with the mess, pronto, if I knew what was good for me. Knowing what’s good for me has never been my forte. Google “slow learner” and my picture shows up in …

And the Winners Are…

Thanks to everyone who participated in the month-long giveaway to celebrate my one year anniversary as a published author. I’m tickled pink so many people participated. In fact, my first giveaway was so successful, I’ve decided to mail an autographed copy of Until Thanksgiving to five lucky winners. I’m especially grateful to Lane Hayes, Z. Allora, Tempe O’Riley, Andrew Grey, and Shira Anthony for guest posts during the giveaway. Even though they all write male-male romances, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more diverse group of authors. I hope one of the new releases they talked about piqued your interest and that you’ve found another “must read” writer. The winners are: Pam Blevins, who I also proclaim my biggest fan. …

Anniversary Give Away Contest

A year ago in August, Dreamspinner Press offered me a contract for my first novel. To celebrate, I’m giving away autographed copies of Until Thanksgiving. How many? I have no idea. Maybe I’ll send a copy to everyone who enters. That’s what I’d like to do, anyway. But with my luck, the offer would go viral and I’d be on the hook for millions of copies. To cover my ass, I’ve made up a point system, based on comments on my blog during the month of August. Earn one point for each comment on posts written by me. Really want an autographed copy? Comments on a guest post will earn you three points. You can comment as many times as …

Ignorance No Longer Bliss

I’ve always heard that ignorance is bliss. Not knowing about stuff–however you choose to define stuff–won’t hurt you. Apparently, a significant portion of our population believes this to be true. In fact, I’ve come to believe that a hefty percent of Americans desire ignorance. That’s why they drop out of high school, denigrate college-educated people as “the liberal elite,” and totally disregard scientific evidence for climate change, evolution, and anything else they don’t agree with. Pervasive ignorance would be funny if it wasn’t so scary. Ignorant people fail to understand the difference between facts, opinions, and theories. A fact is an indisputable and verifiable truth: The grass in my yard is green. An opinion is a point of view: Bermuda …

If I Ruled the World…

Do you ever have one of those days where everything people do pisses you off? Surely I’m not the only person who has that kind of day. Maybe it’s the early heat. Or maybe it’s that so many people are total f’ing idiots. I’ll let you decide. While you’re thinking about it, here are some of the changes I’d make if I ruled the world. Driver’s license tests would be a LOT harder. Applicants would have to pass a rigorous driving test. The written test would take a couple of hours and include questions about texting while driving, procedures to follow when encountering pedestrians or bike riders, and why one shouldn’t just stop in the middle of the highway for …
