Keep on Keeping On

A bunch of age-related health issues hit me around my fiftieth birthday. My BMI (Body Mass Index) was well over 30 (obese), my activity level was zero, and the scale had drifted close to 250 pounds. Even my dress pants had elastic waistbands. Middle-age had caught up with me, taken up residence around my waist, and given me brand new man boobs that jiggled when I walked. A close call with cancer and a simultaneous brush with adult-onset diabetes were a wake up call. My lifestyle was killing me. Unless I wanted to go on disability, wear a shirt for the rest of my life, and ride around in one of those motorized carts at Walmart, things had to change. …

And Somehow…Results

Healthy Lifestyle and I are still having trouble getting along. I left the bitch in Georgia when Toodles and I went to Kentucky. There was just too much going on to be bothered with her. Since I’ve quit paying so much attention, my weight has steadily dropped about a pound a week. The ten pounds I keep gaining back are gone, at least for now. Whether I gain them back or finally move on to the next ten remains to be seen. I’m optimistic. In the last two months I’ve skipped sessions with my trainer, cut my Zumba time in half, and just about stopped doing any strength training at all. I’m not running as much either, though I have …

Ongoing Relationship Issues

You haven’t read anything about my diet and exercise program since me and Healthy Lifestyle started feuding early last month. I said then that we wouldn’t be having this trouble if she just didn’t expect so much from me. Seriously. “Fine,” she said. “Do things your way. Remember how that worked for you? Remember where you were back before we met? Is that what you want?” Lighten up, bitch. And so it goes. That I know she’s right doesn’t keep me from resenting the way she bosses me around. I mean, really–I’m a grown-ass man. I’m trying to exercise for at least thirty minutes, six days a week. Trying. I’ve missed a day or two here and there because of …

Waiting Games

Three weeks ago today I submitted a query, synopsis, and the first twenty pages of Until Thanksgiving to a publisher. Three days later, I received a response to my query: a request from the publisher for the full manuscript. I sent the manuscript within thirty minutes and have been dancing off the ceiling ever since. Waiting is not my forte. Years ago I learned two ways to eat up waiting time. Sleep, or stay busy. Long-term sleeping really isn’t an option. Since I couldn’t sleep past seven if my life depended on it, I’ve been trying to stay busy. Some would spend more time running and going to the gym. Not me. I still try to do something for thirty …

In My Defense…

I need to talk about the photograph that showed up on my Facebook page late yesterday afternoon. The emails I’ve received, the comments people made on the original Facebook post, and the things people have said to me since they saw the photograph demand a response. Today I’m here to offer my defense. People want to know what’s in the bowl. It’s ice cream (Neopolitan, so of course I had to have some of all three flavors) drizzled with chocolate syrup (Hershey’s. Is there another kind?), covered with whipped topping, dusted with sprinkles and peanuts, and finished with just a little more chocolate syrup. I spent my first two years in the workforce dipping ice-cream, so I know a thing …

The Problem with Subway

Before I joined Weight Watcher’s a year ago, I never went to Subway. Ever. I’d evolved through all the various fast food options to a Grilled House Salad from Zaxby’s with honey mustard dressing for lunch practically every day. I had no idea my healthy salad costs 26 Weight Watcher’s points–better than half of my daily point allowance. These days I usually run home for a salad I put together with various greens, olive oil vinaigrette dressing (because it’s healthy), fat-free cheddar cheese, a few croutons (I’m addicted to the Texas Toast black pepper and sea salt croutons), and either a can of white tuna or something left over from dinner the night before, like a grilled chicken breast. But …

They’re Back

The same ten pounds I’ve battled for the last twelve months have returned. Since we had to go out for anything we ate, I expected to maybe lose weight on vacation. I hear you laughing, but it’s happened before. Honest. After we got home, I stepped onto the scale–naked–so whatever number popped up would be all me. I admired my new tan line in the bathroom mirror as I waited for the digits to stop flashing. I weigh EXACTLY the same as I did this time last year–before Weight Watchers, the gym membership, and my new running habit. Wah! I blame the tan. It couldn’t possibly have been anything I ate. Isn’t seafood good for you? Or maybe it was …

The Long Run…

Changing my lifestyle has been high on my priority list for a full year now. I’m not talking about my gay lifestyle, which doesn’t work that way anyhow. I’m talking about aspects of my life over which I do have a fair degree of control: diet and exercise. I’m still kinda sorta loosely on Weight Watchers. Mostly. When I’m being good and avoiding stuff I shouldn’t eat, I religiously track all my food and keep up with my points allowance. I do good most of the time, eating healthy stuff all day and blowing it a little right before bed most nights. My points allowance can handle my nightly slip ups. It’s the bigger binges that really mess me up. …

The Coupons Made Me Do It!

I’m five days into my new exercise routine. So far, so good–at least as far as exercise goes. Who knew that sticking to the exercise plan would be easier than eating right? I blame our active social life. We went out to dinner with friends Friday night.  Had I stayed with the entree and salad I ordered, things would have been fine. But I had a couple of margaritas (probably the worse thing someone trying to lose weight could drink) and enjoyed most of the fried zucchini appetizer we all shared. As is always the case when eating out, I burned up quite a few of  the weekly points I’m allowed to have on Weight Watchers. Yesterday I vowed to …

My So-Called (Healthy) Life

At yesterday’s weekly session, my personal trainer checked my measurements for the first time since late last year. The good news is that my body fat dropped another one percent and my calves are a tad thinner. Everything else–including my weight–was essentially the same. Read on for the bad news. No doubt, you’re thinking I was disappointed. My trainer certainly thought so. But I wasn’t. Yeah, seeing a big change in the positive direction would have been nice. But given that I usually gain anywhere from 15 to 30 pounds from December to April, I was frankly thrilled that my numbers were essentially unchanged. The one percent drop in body fat was a bonus. Even so, the lack of forward …
