Movie Time

Finally made it to the theater to see Wicked–first movie I’ve gone to see since Les Mis came out in 2012. Loved it.

Seeing a movie alone is not an issue–or wasn’t before my vision deteriorated. Wicked’s long playtime (more than 2 1/2 hours) and a mid-afternoon first showing forced my hand. I don’t drive in the dark and was also a little worried about finding my way around an unfamiliar place.

Despite having already seen it, my friend Jesse volunteered to take me and show me the ropes. I’m grateful. Finding the right seat and figuring out how to operate the recliner would have been impossible without his help.

Selecting seats at the ticket counter was new for me. When we got inside, the numbers were invisible to me. Not that it mattered. We were the only people in the theater for the entire show.

The cost was another surprise. A small drink, a small popcorn and my ticket came to $35. I remember paying $5 for the same thing years ago–often for a double feature–with enough leftover for an icecream cone after the movie.

Despite the cost, I’m happy to have seen Wicked on the big screen. Screen size is less motivation for me than a desire to see a movie ASAP. Otherwise, I wait for it to stream somewhere.

I barely watched Prime and should have canceled my subscription ages ago. Netflix is great. I watch enough to be running low on options. I live for crap I shouldn’t waste time watching, like Love is Blind, The Ultimatum and The Circle.

I added Disney+ bundled with Hulu for a few bucks more than I’d been paying each month for Prime. Musicals are, hands down, my favorite genre and Disney is chock-full of them. I’ve been glued to my TV ever since.

The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins and others I’ve seen hundreds of times and never tire of watching. I especially enjoyed The Greatest Showman–a new favorite I hadn’t seen before. The remake of West Side Story–a decades-long favorite–was also great.

I alternate between animated and live-action movies. I’m working my way through all the animated classics–especially any available in my childhood. Finding out I’d missed a few was a shock. I’d swear I’d seen Sleeping Beauty and 101 Dalmatians before–they’re so familiar–but I hadn’t.

There are lots more on my watch list–pretty much everything released in this century. That’s just Disney. I’ve scrolled through what’s available from Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars, but have only glanced at Hulu.

No rush. I’m hoping the cornucopia of viewing options makes the winter months pass more quickly. It’s not even January and I’m ready for spring!

As always, thanks for stopping by and best wishes for the new year.
