My garden plans were disrupted early this season by drought, Tootsie’s demise, and the arrival of Mavis. With few exceptions, two flats of seedlings started indoors in early February didn’t make it. I never got around to planting two or three more flats.

Even so, I do have a bit of a garden. When rain finally appeared in the forecast, I direct-sowed some seed. A heat-tolerant lettuce and one tomato plant are the sole survivors of my neglect.

Early drought nudged me toward sticking mostly to pots. I planted okra, yellow squash and watermelon seed directly in the pots. When rain finally appeared in the forecast, I direct-sowed more tomatoes, squash and watermelon in the ground. Heat lingers in Athens long enough for the early start to be more option than necessity.

Soon after Mavis arrived, I planted a row each of green beans and corn. Mavis dug up most of the corn seed and ate all but five. Apparently, she doesn’t like green beans.

A few flowers planted last year came back. Perennial gloriosa daisies doubled in size. Snapdragons planted last fall were beautiful for weeks but I failed to get a picture. A castor bean sprouted from seed left behind last season.

To be honest, I’m surprised Mavis hasn’t pulled up any plants. So far, she’s ignored the squash. I’m anxious to see how she does with watermelons. I’ll keep you posted. As always, thanks for stopping by.
