My father taught me anything worth doing is worth doing well. Of course, he never actually used those words. Instead, he’d berate me for being half-assed. Thanks to this early training (or an undiagnosed personality disorder), I don’t do things by halves. Nope. Not me. I’m whole ass or not at all. Insecurity nourishes my obsessive tendencies. To compensate for feeling like I’m not up to the task, I play to win and am always looking for ways to improve my game. This competitive nature, on occasion, makes me come across as a bit of a jerk. I’ve never been a fan of the treadmill. But as much as I hate the confounded torture device, I hate not running more. So I finally forced myself to adjust. Since then, I’ve come to see a few advantages a treadmill offers. Weather excuses disappear. I don’t like to run when it’s too hot, too cold, too windy, not windy enough, or raining. That rules out most days, especially in January, February and March. I can run on the treadmill year round. Fewer scheduling conflicts. I’ve gained ten pounds in the last few weeks. Why? A deep and abiding affection for Simply Lemonade, Nabisco Ginger Snaps, and ice-cream (any brand will do) had nothing to do with the extra weight. I blame cold weather. Why? Because I’m a fair weather runner. I love running shirtless, and that requires sunshine, temperatures in the 60s or 70s, and a little breeze. For most of last year, I ran three miles or more, two or three times every week, logging more than 330 miles in 94 sessions on MapMyRun. To make sure I didn’t pay for something I never used, I got the most expensive plan available. I don’t know about everyone else, but dancing is in my genes. No, I’m not talking about an inherited ability to trip the light fantastic. I can hold my own on the dance floor, thank you very much, but would never win any contests. My lack of talent, however, in no way diminishes the joy I feel when dancing to a favorite song. Exercise has never really been my cup of tea. In the past, there may have been activities I enjoyed that happened to be good exercise. The dance floor at Johnny Angel’s kept me thin through my early twenties. Trust me, my interest in dancing had nothing to do with exercise. With each passing year, the activities I enjoyed burned fewer and fewer calories. After a bunch of health problems hit all at once in my late forties, I vowed to do better. I started riding my bicycle, weather permitting, and when conditions were right, even enjoyed it. A Little Operation

Tomorrow I’m having surgery. Nothing serious. The surgeon will repair the hernia I’ve had in my groin for more than twenty years. It’s never bothered me, so the advice has always been not to worry about it. But it’s bigger, thanks to my gym routines, and now that I’m 55, putting off the surgery no longer makes sense. I’m not worried about the operation. As with everything these days but open heart surgery, no overnight stay is needed. I know the surgeon well and am glad he’s the one who will operate on me. He says I’ll be able to do whatever I want after thirty days. My recent ex is coming over tonight. He’ll drive me back and forth to …

Good News from My Village of Doctors

Everyone knows it takes a village to raise a child. Growing older requires a village… of doctors. In the last few weeks I’ve had appointments with my dentist, hygienist, optometrist, periodontist, internist, dermatologist, retina specialist, and my colorectal surgeon. Today I saw the surgeon about a hernia repair I’ve needed for at least twenty years. Don’t make any rude jokes because it’s not like that, but I love my colorectal surgeon. He’s performed three colonoscopies and removed a cancerous lesion that he found in the first one. I told him it was high time he got a chance to explore another side of me. Yeah. That’s exactly what I said. I may have also mentioned something about having lost fifty pounds …
