The Problem with Subway

Before I joined Weight Watcher’s a year ago, I never went to Subway. Ever. I’d evolved through all the various fast food options to a Grilled House Salad from Zaxby’s with honey mustard dressing for lunch practically every day. I had no idea my healthy salad costs 26 Weight Watcher’s points–better than half of my daily point allowance. These days I usually run home for a salad I put together with various greens, olive oil vinaigrette dressing (because it’s healthy), fat-free cheddar cheese, a few croutons (I’m addicted to the Texas Toast black pepper and sea salt croutons), and either a can of white tuna or something left over from dinner the night before, like a grilled chicken breast. They’re Back

The same ten pounds I’ve battled for the last twelve months have returned. Since we had to go out for anything we ate, I expected to maybe lose weight on vacation. I hear you laughing, but it’s happened before. Honest. After we got home, I stepped onto the scale–naked–so whatever number popped up would be all me. I admired my new tan line in the bathroom mirror as I waited for the digits to stop flashing. My So-Called (Healthy) Life

At yesterday’s weekly session, my personal trainer checked my measurements for the first time since late last year. The good news is that my body fat dropped another one percent and my calves are a tad thinner. Everything else–including my weight–was essentially the same. Read on for the bad news. No doubt, you’re thinking I was disappointed. My trainer certainly thought so. But I wasn’t. Yeah, seeing a big change in the positive direction would have been nice. But given that I usually gain anywhere from 15 to 30 pounds from December to April, I was frankly thrilled that my numbers were essentially unchanged. The one percent drop in body fat was a bonus. The Week in Review

For the past two weeks, I’ve been too busy to blog. I’m still busy, but the bug I picked up at a conference last week in Charlotte has prevented me from running or going to the gym. Consequently, I have a bit more free time. The conference went well–better than I expected. The hotel staff did a good job of taking care of us, the food was good, and I didn’t encounter any problems. Without seeing the final bill, my only complaint is that we had to pay $360 to use two little extension cords for two days. I’m not kidding. Thursday night, I went out to dinner with colleagues I’ve known for nearly thirty years to a fancy all …

Running Man

I’ve been trying to run at least three times a week since September. Most weeks I find a way to squeeze all three runs into an overly busy schedule. You can’t possibly be as impressed by this as I am. Going to Zumba is a priority because it’s so much fun. I love dancing like a dirty girl with all my Zumba pals. I’d keep doing it even if I didn’t have my Zumba King title to defend. Running is different. I always run by myself, and frankly, it isn’t all that fun. Just Doing It

The long break between Christmas and New Year’s seriously messed with my training regimen. Except for my thrice weekly Zumba classes, I quit working out, stopped running, and gained fifteen pounds. Going into the break, I thought the time off from work would enable me to exercise more. Instead, I lost all momentum and spent the majority of my time off on the sofa watching television. After Christmas,the idea of the 5K I’ve signed up to run ten days from today filled me with dread–similar to what I felt a couple of years ago in anticipation of rectal surgery I had to have. Progress!

Yesterday I had my weekly appointment with Armand, my personal trainer. I told him I was getting frustrated and discouraged by my lack of progress. He begged to differ, saying he could tell a big difference since I started working with him two months ago. I wasn’t convinced, so Armand decided to take all my measurements again.  I was pleased but not overly impressed that my percent body fat had dropped by a full point since the last reading. Then he pulled out the tape measure. My calves are two inches bigger than they were two months ago. My thighs and waist are unchanged. Confession Time

Yesterday I had an appointment with my regular doctor. Because of cholesterol medications, I see the doctor about every six months to make sure my liver is okay.  For the math impaired, my last appointment was in May. Regular readers know I’ve made quite a few rather significant lifestyle changes since May.  Back then, I was riding my bike at least three times a week and had just joined Weight Watchers.  I hadn’t yet started running, gone to a Zumba class, or joined the gym. Diet and Exercise Lessons Learned

The end of my ninth week on Weight Watchers is rapidly approaching. Including the eight pounds lost in the two weeks before I started, I’ve now lost almost twenty pounds. Slap my ass and call me skinny! Well, not quite skinny. According to that silly Body Mass Index thingy, I’m still obese. I blame the vegetarians and dietitians of the world. My Ice Cream Diet

I don’t know about you, but every winter my weight goes up another five or ten pounds. Once summer arrives, I’m usually able to drop about half those extra pounds.  Consequently, my weight trends upward some three to five pounds a year. Once upon a time, those extra pounds arrived between Thanksgiving and Christmas. While I am a bit of a slow learner, I do eventually figure these things out. In recent years, I’ve taken steps to make sure I don’t pile on extra weight over the holidays. Now they show up after the holidays are safely behind me. They seem to have multiplied, too.
