Working It in the Yard

My Zumba King get-up got me the prize for best costume in my Zumba class last Halloween–a CD with the Monday night instructor’s twenty favorite Zumba songs. I burned it on to my computers at work and at home, synced it onto my iPod Nano, keep the CD in my car, and added it to my Cloud on iTunes. Since October, I listen to at least a song or two from it practically every day. Last week, I got another CD at the Zumbathon I attended at the YWCA. This one contains 17 songs from my Sunday afternoon Zumba instructor. It’s also been downloaded everywhere I have music. I even created a special playlist with all my Zumba songs–35 all …

My So-Called (Healthy) Life

At yesterday’s weekly session, my personal trainer checked my measurements for the first time since late last year. The good news is that my body fat dropped another one percent and my calves are a tad thinner. Everything else–including my weight–was essentially the same. Read on for the bad news. No doubt, you’re thinking I was disappointed. My trainer certainly thought so. But I wasn’t. Yeah, seeing a big change in the positive direction would have been nice. But given that I usually gain anywhere from 15 to 30 pounds from December to April, I was frankly thrilled that my numbers were essentially unchanged. The one percent drop in body fat was a bonus. My Fancy New Running Shoes

After I first started running late last year, I went to Academy Sports to buy some running shoes. Frankly, my idea of a good running shoe came down to selecting the pair that would look best on me. Until recently, I had no idea that all the different kinds of sports attire are more about function than form. Live and learn. The number and variety of running shoe choices overwhelmed me. If a purchase requires me to select from more than three options, I’m doomed. That’s why we don’t have wallpaper anywhere in our house. But I had to make a choice. My knees and shins demanded it. A New Me On the Way

Until fairly recently, exercise was something totally foreign to me. About ten years ago–before I had settled down with my partner–this guy I was dating tried to get me to walk. I tried it a few times, hated it, and quit. In early 2006, a friend of mine loaned me a book called Younger Next Year.  The book was about the human body constantly replacing  cells. If you sit around all the time and otherwise don’t take care of yourself, the new cells are weaker than the cells they replace. If you exercise regularly, eat a nutritious diet, and otherwise take care of yourself, the replacement cells will be stronger than those they replace. The constant regeneration of cells means …

Running Man

I’ve been trying to run at least three times a week since September. Most weeks I find a way to squeeze all three runs into an overly busy schedule. You can’t possibly be as impressed by this as I am. Going to Zumba is a priority because it’s so much fun. I love dancing like a dirty girl with all my Zumba pals. I’d keep doing it even if I didn’t have my Zumba King title to defend. Running is different. I always run by myself, and frankly, it isn’t all that fun. That my activity level has increased rather dramatically in the last six months is common knowledge among people who know me. I blame myself. Especially when I first became more active, the change was so drastic, wherever I went I talked a lot about all the new things I was doing. Three of my coworkers invited me to be on their team for Walk Georgia–an initiative of University of Georgia Cooperative Extension to help participants develop physical activity habits so they’ll be healthier and more physically fit. Participants log physical activity onto a web site. The more miles you log, the more Georgia counties you get to virtually visit. Our Dean is offering an award to the team that logs …

Today I ran in my second 5K race. My goal was to improve on the 40 minutes and 36 seconds it took me to complete the first one. Toward that end, I’ve been training for the last few weeks. This week, my plan was to run four miles on both Tuesday and Thursday. I had a hard time with my Tuesday run. Dreary weather and painful shins really slowed me down. In fact, I put in my worst time ever–nearly an hour to run the full four miles. Wednesday evening, I participated in a Zumbathon fundraiser for a local organization that fights child abuse. Since the first of the year, I’ve been running like crazy. Seems like there’s never a spare moment to just kick back and relax. Well, that’s not entirely true, but I sure don’t have the kind of downtime I had just a few years ago. Four years ago, we didn’t have any dogs. It’s not that our little chihuahuas are terribly demanding. About all they require this time of year is a few trips a day outside. Just Doing It

The long break between Christmas and New Year’s seriously messed with my training regimen. Except for my thrice weekly Zumba classes, I quit working out, stopped running, and gained fifteen pounds. Going into the break, I thought the time off from work would enable me to exercise more. Instead, I lost all momentum and spent the majority of my time off on the sofa watching television. My First 5K Run…Ever!

My first 5K event took place in January of 2009. I signed up to run in the Chilly Dawg because it  was sponsored by my employer.  The plan was to walk it, but I quit before I even reached the half way point. This morning I ran in the Sleighbell.  Having failed miserably at my first 5K, this time I was bound and determined to finish.
